Susy Boyer

MLAK (Karlee Mackie) is a Byron Bay-based artist whose work exists in a dreamlike realm of surrealism, symbolism, and raw self-expression. Her paintings are a fusion of myth, nostalgia, and subconscious storytelling, often featuring bold yet playful figures, otherworldly animals, and cryptic visual poetry. Her compositions, often infused with bold color blocking, unexpected textures, and layered iconography, evoke an almost hallucinatory presence—a universe where cowgirl cats, golden crabs, and masked tigers coexist in a strange, electric harmony. Through her work, MLAK explores femininity, intuition, and the blurred space between the seen and unseen.

Susy grew up in Brisbane and studied Visual Communication at the QCA. Now living and working by the sea, surrounded by nature in the beautiful semi-tropical region near Byron Bay NSW, her sunny studio is filled with the sounds of the ocean and birdsong which she finds both calming and inspiring.

“I’m inspired by the look of things and drawn to capturing certain moments in the lives of people and the brilliance of nature.”

Susy also teaches art classes on the Gold Coast and mentors some very talented young creatives.
